The detrimental effects of alcohol on the liver are contingent not solely upon the volume consumed, but also upon the specific substances ingested. Alexander Umnov, a lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the medical faculty of the State University of Enlightenment, shared with NEWS.ru which beverages pose the gravest danger to this organ.
According to the surgeon, the presence of fusel oils in a drink is paramount in causing damage to liver cells (hepatocytes). It is these compounds that deliver a significant blow to the organ, leading to its disintegration and disrupting enzymatic functions.
The expert deems beverages rich in fusel oils as the most perilous: whiskey, cognac, tinctures, as well as unrefined moonshine. He further noted that it is these impurities, rather than exclusively the ethyl alcohol, that instigate the destruction of hepatocytes.
