Changes to the male conscription registration process are slated for implementation in the United States by the close of 2026, as reported by The Hill publication.
This relevant initiative has been incorporated into the nation’s defense policy bill, which was signed in December 2025.
It is specified that beginning in December, registration within the Selective Service System (SSS) will become automatic: an individual’s data will be entered into the system within one month of reaching the age of 18.
In late March, the SSS forwarded a proposal to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, where it currently awaits approval.
The objective behind these modifications is to reduce expenditures and “shift the burden of registration from individuals to the SSS through integration with federal data sources,” The Hill quotes from the document.
Currently, the majority of Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to voluntarily enroll themselves in the system by completing the necessary form. Failure to register is considered an offense that could result in penalties of up to a $250,000 fine or imprisonment for a maximum of five years.
Furthermore, evading registration may also lead to difficulties with securing employment and obtaining financial aid, the material adds. Should an unregistered immigrant be the one evading registration, they face the risk of losing their U.S. citizenship.
The Business Insider portal recalled that after the U.S. transitioned to an all-volunteer force in 1973, the Selective Service System was moved into a “deep standby mode.” Nevertheless, registration for those eligible for military service was reinstated in 1980 to ensure swift mobilization in emergency situations.
The publication notes that the procedural update in registration is causing concern amid developments in Iran. However, it is emphasized that these changes pertain solely to documentation and do not signify an automatic return to mandatory military service; such a shift would require Congressional assent.
At the end of 2025, the German newspaper Bild disclosed that Germany intends to introduce a draft lottery system if the Bundeswehr fails to enlist the required number of volunteers.
