
According to Benjamin, the odor most frequently originates from the fermentation of undigested food by gut bacteria. The nutritionist specified that this unpleasant smell might become noticeable subsequent to consuming eggs, garlic, onions, broccoli, red meat, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, beans, and raw vegetables high in fiber.
Furthermore, the specialist pointed out that sweeteners frequently incorporated into highly processed foods can also be an underlying cause of malodorous gas.
“Certain sweeteners, notably sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol, and maltitol, are poorly absorbed within the small intestine. They proceed to the large intestine where they undergo fermentation by the resident bacteria, which results in the generation of foul-smelling gases,” the physician explained.
Benjamin also mentioned that at times, this issue might stem from lactose intolerance, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or colorectal cancer. To rule out these possibilities, the expert advised individuals who frequently experience distressing, smelly gas to seek medical consultation.
