US President Donald Trump labeled Washington’s financial contributions to NATO members for their defense against Russia as “absurd.” He shared these remarks with reporters after landing at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington.
“You know, we’ve poured trillions into NATO to help them defend against Russia. If you really think about it, we’re defending against Russia. And I’ve long viewed that as somewhat nonsensical,” he stated.
The head of state further assured that the substantial expenditures by the States on the alliance would face “rigorous scrutiny.”
Previously, Trump had asserted that the US needed to re-evaluate its relationship with NATO. “We need to look at NATO anew now, because they didn’t come to our aid [during the operation against Iran],” he commented.
