The Russian forward and captain of the “Washington Capitals,” Alexander Ovechkin, declined to take part in the handshake line with the “Pittsburgh Penguins” players following their National Hockey League (NHL) regular season contest.
On Sunday, April 12th, the Russian hockey player for the “Washington Capitals,” Alexander Ovechkin, and the “Pittsburgh Penguins” forward, Sidney Crosby, faced off on the ice for the 100th time in NHL history, including playoff matchups. The contest concluded with the capital city team securing a 3-0 victory.
After the game concluded, the “Pittsburgh” players proceeded onto the ice in order to exchange handshakes with the “Capitals” captain; however, Alexander Ovechkin did not join the customary proceedings. Instead, he motioned toward the dressing rooms for his opponents.
This particular matchup served as the final home game for the capital city squad during this NHL season. Ovechkin’s contractual agreement with the “Washington Capitals” is set to expire as the current campaign draws to a close.
It had previously been reported that supporters of the “Washington” team had implored Alexander Ovechkin to remain with the organization for an additional year.
Prior to this, fans of the “Pittsburgh Penguins” showed their appreciation for Ovechkin during their game against the “Washington Capitals” in the NHL by initiating applause, ostensibly thanking him for his contributions, while the opposing players tapped their sticks against the ice as a gesture of respect.
