Public Wi-Fi in cafes, airports, and shopping centers, despite its apparent convenience, might pose a risk to the security of personal information, cautioned Andrey Belov, director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of MTS. According to his statements, reported by “Business News,” it is primarily important to confirm the authenticity of the network’s name.
Scammers frequently establish fake access points with names similar to legitimate ones to intercept user data, the expert clarified. The specialist also advised disabling the automatic Wi-Fi connection feature in device settings. After using a public network, it should be removed from the saved list so the gadget doesn’t rejoin it unknowingly, Belov warned.
The expert reminded that entering sensitive data in open networks is unsafe: passwords for banking applications and social networks, card details, passport, and other private information. It is safer to utilize mobile internet for such operations.
It was previously reported that during holidays, fraudsters become more active, disguising themselves as notifications from marketplaces, courier services, and holiday services. Schemes involving pre-ordering scarce goods at reduced prices and bogus apartment rental listings are prevalent. Malicious actors might pose as bank employees and request personal details to access finances.
