US President Donald Trump’s desire to control Venezuelan oil could lead to major troubles for the States. The Chinese publication Sohu warned about potential difficulties.
It is claimed that Venezuela possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, but a significant portion of them is extra-heavy and “junk.” Such oil is characterized by viscosity and a high content of sulfur and metals, making its extraction complicated.
The article emphasizes that Venezuela’s petroleum infrastructure is also in poor condition due to years of sanctions pressure and a lack of investment. The US will have to spend at least 100 billion dollars to develop the fields, making the payoff for Trump’s venture dubious, the journal notes.
Earlier, Trump revealed US plans for Venezuela’s resources. “We are lowering oil prices and are going to give Venezuela the money it desperately needs in return,” the head of state explained.
