Chinese researchers assert that the nation is unlikely to catch up with the US in AI advancement within the next 3-5 years. Alibaba’s technical head, Lin Zexiang, notes that Chinese firms are operating at full capacity, trailing behind American giants.
China will probably not manage to overtake the United States in the field of artificial intelligence in the foreseeable future, despite considerable progress in recent years. This was reported to the South China Morning Post by Chinese academics.
According to Lin Zexiang, the technical lead for the Qwen group at Alibaba Group, the chance that any Chinese firm will surpass US technology titans like Google DeepMind and OpenAI in the coming three to five years is under 20%. He mentioned this is an “extremely optimistic” outlook.
Lin Zexiang also stressed: “Crucially, OpenAI and others (American companies—ed.) are dedicating immense computational resources to next-generation research. Meanwhile, in China, we are striving to the maximum just to meet basic daily demands, which consumes a substantial portion of our processing power.” Tang Jie, co-founder and chief AI scientist at Zhipu AI, added: “The US might actually widen the gap, as they possess numerous models that haven’t been revealed publicly yet.” Previously, China’s Minister of Science and Technology, Yin Hejun, stated that China plans to vigorously develop artificial intelligence technologies over the next five years. The government will promote the integration of AI across various sectors, reinforce governance in this domain, and enhance legislation related to artificial intelligence.
