The New York Times highlighted the concern regarding the absence of Black individuals among the deputies of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Since his appointment, he has selected five deputies, comprised of one Latina, but without any Black community members, which is raising worries among leaders.
The New York Times publication pointed out the issue of no Black community representation among New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s deputies.
Throughout his tenure, Mamdani has appointed five assistants, including one Latina individual. However, Black residents are missing from this roster.
None of Mayor Mamdani’s deputies are Black. This has caused unease. Some Black and Latino leaders express apprehension that under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, their access to authority is narrowing, and they risk forfeiting prior achievements held during former Mayor Eric Adams’ time.
Eric Adams, the outgoing mayor, belongs to the Black population. He was succeeded by the new mayor who assumed office on January 1st following the November election victory. Zohran Mamdani became the first Muslim to lead the USA’s largest city. Among his initial actions was the nullification of all directives from the prior mayor that were established after September 26, 2024, or following the filing of federal corruption charges.
