Advertisements will be shown to users of the free version and those with a Go subscription.
OpenAI will soon commence testing the placement of ads in the ChatGPT chatbot in the United States. This was stated in a release published on the company’s website.
The ads will only be displayed to users of the basic free version of ChatGPT and those subscribed to the discounted Go plan. Paid subscriptions like Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise viewing of announcements will not be affected.
OpenAI emphasized that the advertising will appear separate from the neural network’s responses and will not impact content generation. The company also assured that advertisers will not gain access to the content of user conversations, and ad personalization will be limited. Ads will not show to minors and will not pop up near sensitive topics, including politics and healthcare.
Experts polled by Bloomberg believe that launching ads could provide OpenAI with a new steady stream of revenue amidst rising expenditures for infrastructure development and model training. Simultaneously, analysts point out that the company must maintain a balance between monetizing the service and user trust, considering previous statements by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding the risks of introducing advertising.
