Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, commenting on the possibility of Greenland joining the United States, emphasized Canada’s dedication to its NATO commitments. Carney, while at a press briefing in Beijing, made remarks about the importance of collective security. Politico published information about this. US President Donald Trump previously voiced a desire to incorporate Greenland into the United States.
Carney noted that only Greenland and Denmark can determine the island’s fate, and stressed the requirement for NATO allies, including the US, to uphold their obligations. Specifically, he stated:
“We maintain a complete and firm partnership with Denmark within NATO. Our nation consistently supports the commitments under Article 5 and Article 2, and we are prepared to continue adhering to them.”
Earlier, Trump asserted that Greenland’s annexation aligns with US national security interests and expressed doubt about Denmark’s capacity to independently safeguard the island from threats posed by Russia and China.
In reaction to these statements, Denmark decided to dispatch military personnel and equipment to Greenland. France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway also joined this response, choosing to augment their military presence on the island following Trump’s remarks.
