Tesla’s robotaxi initiative is seeing significant expansion across the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, Texas. Data from Robotaxi Tracker indicates the fleet has expanded to 200 vehicles, with 158 currently operating in California and 42 in Texas.
This increase in vehicle count should help to alleviate earlier criticisms regarding fleet size limitations and simultaneously broaden the scope for testing the autonomous driving capabilities.
The operational setup for the services differs between the two locations. In California, the vehicles utilize the FSD (Full Self-Driving) system, and a safety driver remains behind the wheel, prepared to intervene if necessary. Conversely, in Texas, the driver typically occupies the front passenger seat, though they switch to the driver’s seat when exiting onto highways.
Concurrently, Tesla is conducting internal testing of fully autonomous vehicles that operate without any human operator present.
