Researchers from Fudan University in China have determined that consuming meat in moderation aids in maintaining good health and extends lifespan. The analysis indicated that integrating modest amounts of meat products into one’s daily meals is particularly beneficial for older adults.
Five thousand participants, all over the age of 80, took part in the study. Three-quarters of the volunteers consumed meat every day, while the remainder followed a vegetarian eating plan. The findings revealed that for individuals with a normal or higher body weight, the impact of their diet type on longevity was negligible. However, among those who were underweight, meat demonstrated a beneficial influence on how long they lived.
The scientists pointed out that a lack of protein weakens the immune system, slows down the production of hormones and enzymes, and reduces metabolic rate. Furthermore, excluding meat from one’s diet could lead to fatigue, irritability, and depressive moods, given that amino acids have a direct bearing on emotional well-being.
