WhatsApp* (owned by Meta, whose activities are deemed extremist and banned in Russia) has rolled out a “Strict Account Settings” feature, designed to bolster user security. Among its capabilities, this update lets users block media shared by individuals whose numbers aren’t saved in their contacts, as detailed in a blog post from the messaging application.
“We are launching a new capability today called ‘Strict Account Settings,’ which functions much like an isolation mode,” the announcement stated.
This feature involves tightening the user’s account configuration, resulting in certain limitations on how WhatsApp* operates. Specifically, it grants the ability to prevent the receipt of attachments and multimedia items sent by non-contacts.
It is also noted that the messenger has incorporated the Rust programming language into its framework, which aids in safeguarding user messages, images, and videos against threats such as spyware.
On Monday, Telegram founder Pavel Durov labeled WhatsApp* as insecure, highlighting numerous potential attack vectors for the messenger. American entrepreneur Elon Musk voiced his agreement with this assessment earlier on Tuesday.
