Within a large-scale international operation conducted in the northern reaches of the Atlantic Ocean, Portuguese authorities successfully intercepted a specialized submarine carrying approximately nine tonnes of cocaine. Details of this achievement were reported by the Daily Mail publication.
This vessel was located and secured over 400 kilometers away from the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago. It was en route from Latin America towards Europe. The estimated worth of the seized narcotic shipment is reckoned to be around 520 million British pounds, which translates to approximately 54 billion Russian rubles.
According to a spokesperson for Portugal’s law enforcement agencies, this operation marks a record-breaking event concerning the quantity of cocaine confiscated in the nation’s history. The Portuguese Navy and Air Force participated, receiving assistance from the intelligence services of both the USA and the UK. The interception took place amidst severe weather conditions. As officers attempted to board the vessel, the submarine began to sink, resulting in the loss of 35 of the 300 watertight packages containing the narcotics. Four individuals were aboard—three Colombians and one Venezuelan—all of whom were taken into custody.
