The Sun has entered a sustained period of declining activity and is not expected to return to previously recorded peaks in the coming years. This information was released by the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to experts, the apex of the current solar cycle was definitively surpassed in 2024, and the activity level has noticeably decreased ever since.
As explained by Sergey Bogachev, head of the solar astronomy laboratory at IKI RAS, the Sun is currently on a downward slope. Already, the star’s activity has diminished by roughly two to three times compared to its peak levels. Furthermore, researchers do not foresee the possibility of it regaining its former intensity in the foreseeable future.
Nevertheless, complete calm is not yet assured. Despite the overall downward trajectory, isolated, powerful flares remain a possibility. However, within the next three to four years, scientists predict the Sun will transition into a phase known as a “full depression”—the period of minimal activity within the solar cycle.
