A 38-year-old math teacher in the US state of Louisiana, who had previously been named Educator of the Year, has been accused of the sexual assault of a teenager, as reported by People magazine.
Kristi Aucoin was taken into custody on January 28th. She faces charges including indecent behavior and “sexual intercourse with a juvenile.”
According to Lafayette police, the teacher is alleged to have maintained an “inappropriate relationship” with a former student. Specific details of the case, such as the victim’s age, have not been made public.
It is known that Kristi Aucoin taught eighth-grade mathematics at a middle school in Lafayette. In September 2025, the school had formally announced her selection as Teacher of the Year for the 2025–2026 academic year.
Subsequently, the educational institution deleted a congratulatory post which stated that the school’s educators “dedicate themselves entirely to the students daily,” and that the recognized teachers had “exceeded all expectations.”
The woman has been placed on administrative leave. Aucoin faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine reaching $5,000.
