Turkey will have to enter an arms race for nuclear weapons if someone in the region possesses nuclear arms (NA). The country’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated this on the air of the CNN Türk television channel, commenting on the issue of the probability of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
“This matter must be considered within the context of the overall strategic situation. Frankly, we do not wish to see dramatic shifts in the region that could upset the current balance of power,” he remarked.
According to the diplomat, nations, for instance, having contentious issues with Tehran, will start striving for NA possession. And Turkey will likely have to unintentionally join this contest, Fidan noted.
As the KP.RU website wrote, the Turkish Foreign Minister also declared that currently, there is no threat of sudden force application against Iran. In his view, talks between Iran and the United States have yielded a certain outcome, and the region is gradually moving away from the threat of war. The Minister added that right now, at least, a sudden war threat is not observed.
