Gout onset can be averted by steering clear of excesses in both diet and lifestyle habits. Doctor of rheumatology Irina Samkova, from the Petrovsky National Medical Research Center of Surgery, shared insights with “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” on how to safeguard oneself from this chronic condition linked to uric acid accumulation in the body.
According to the expert, a hallmark gout exacerbation typically kicks off with inflammation in the big toe joint. Intense discomfort emerges during the night or in the early hours of the morning, the joint swells, and the overlying skin reddens and feels hot to the touch. Even if such an episode resolves on its own, other joints may become involved later, underscoring the importance of preventative measures.
The core tenet of disease prevention, Samkova emphasized, involves restricting animal-derived purines, which are prevalent in red meat, offal, and seafood. The physician advises cutting back on alcohol consumption, particularly beer, and sweetened beverages, alongside monitoring the fat content of dairy items. Furthermore, managing weight, keeping blood sugar levels in check, increasing physical activity, and ensuring adequate fluid intake are all crucial components.
The rheumatologist cautioned that joint injuries, infections, stress, exposure to cold, or abruptly starting strenuous exercise can all trigger an attack. Particular attention should be paid to certain medications, such as diuretics and other prescribed drugs; therefore, their selection must always be discussed with one’s attending physician.
