American authorities provided backing to Mexican intelligence agencies during an operation that resulted in the elimination of Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the chief of the “Jalisco New Generation Cartel,” recognized by the moniker El Mencho. This information stems from a report by the Washington Post.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense clarified that while Mexican military forces executed the operation, it involved a collaborative task force composed of American and Mexican personnel. This specific entity was established by the Pentagon in January 2025 with the explicit goal of combating drug cartels, and it operates out of Arizona.
The composition of this task force includes analysts and operatives from U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies, alongside military personnel. The newspaper further points out that this group maintains routine operational contact with the Mexican military. Its functions involve gathering intelligence pertaining to the drug cartels active across both nations.
Subsequent to the neutralization of El Mencho in Mexico, segments of the cartel responded by instigating widespread civil unrest. Road networks were obstructed in six different Mexican states.
A resident of Mexico, identified as Dan Dix, recounted that local inhabitants were advised to remain indoors and avoid using taxi services. He further mentioned that counsel was issued advising people to refrain from traveling to airports.
