The United States Coast Guard has initiated an internal probe following the discovery of a hand-drawn swastika at a recruit training facility, according to a report by The Washington Post.
Previously, a controversy arose within the US Coast Guard concerning the reinterpretation of this symbol’s meaning and an attempt to decouple it from its established association with hatred. Admiral Kevin Lunday stated unequivocally that any individual who supports or propagates hateful ideologies must leave the service.
“We reject you. We will not permit anyone to tarnish us with hate,” the Admiral commented.
On February 19th, a drill instructor spotted the swastika marked on a wall inside a men’s restroom at the training center. The publication notes that Lunday promptly traveled to the facility to hold discussions with the 900 recruits and Coast Guard personnel stationed there.
Earlier, the US Coast Guard had revised its internal regulations, removing the swastika from its registry of hate symbols. Under the updated guidelines, Nazi insignia is now categorized as “potentially divisive.”
