
The chief constituent derived from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Dong-Ling-Cao holds promise as a substantial aid in Alzheimer’s disease therapy. The plant’s bioactive substance, oridonin, has exhibited potent anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective qualities in initial examinations.
Researchers from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine recently conducted a study investigating the therapeutic impact of oridonin, a bioactive diterpenoid sourced from Dong-Ling-Cao (Rabdosia rubescens), on Alzheimer’s disease. These findings were officially documented in the journal Phytotherapy Research.
Currently, treatment modalities for Alzheimer’s disease are severely restricted, creating an ongoing, critical need for effective active agents. Select antecedent investigations have focused on medicinal flora, yielding encouraging outcomes.
For instance, a research collective in Japan previously shared in the journal eLife that the medicinal plant Ziziphus jujuba possesses the capacity to restore cognitive functions in individuals suffering from dementia.
Furthermore, another study concluded last year indicated that three specific medicinal herbs are particularly adept at bolstering memory, suggesting they might offer preventative and therapeutic benefits against dementia.
In this current project, the scientists explored how the plant compound oridonin affects Alzheimer’s pathology within microglial cells and neurons under laboratory settings, as well as in murine models.
It was observed that treatment with oridonin substantially curbed the release of pro-inflammatory signaling molecules (specifically interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha) by the microglia. Furthermore, this botanical compound mitigated necroptosis, a specific category of programmed cell demise.
In mice afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, oridonin administration markedly enhanced spatial memory and learning abilities, concurrently leading to a significant reduction in amyloid-beta plaque accumulation, alongside markers for inflammation and necroptosis, according to the investigating team.
Consequently, this naturally derived ingredient appears capable of alleviating key pathological mechanisms inherent to Alzheimer’s disease, thus showcasing considerable therapeutic promise for managing this neurodegenerative condition, which warrants extensive follow-up scrutiny.
