
A recent study conducted by Australian researchers delved into the underlying causes of insomnia. It was discovered that a frequent culprit behind persistent sleeplessness is the dysregulation of circadian rhythms. This disruption prevents the brain from powering down at night, even when the individual is significantly fatigued. The findings of this research were released in the journal Sleep Medicine.
Researchers from the University of South Australia conducted the first in-depth analysis of daily variations in cognitive function among individuals experiencing insomnia. Thirty-two older adults participated in the trial; half of this group had clinically diagnosed sleep disorders. Over a 24-hour period, the subjects remained in bed under dim lighting conditions, instructed to document their thoughts hourly.
All participants exhibited natural fluctuations in mental performance, showing heightened activity during the day and a decrease at night. However, in those afflicted with insomnia, the peak of mental alertness was shifted by approximately six and a half hours, meaning their thoughts remained active when the brain ought to be resting.
The scientists attribute this phenomenon to weakened “sleep signals” stemming from the disruption in the body’s internal clock. The study’s authors propose that managing insomnia should involve light exposure control, noting that consistent daily routines and mindfulness exercises also positively impact nighttime rest quality. Collectively, these non-pharmacological approaches are expected to yield results surpassing those achieved through medication.
