A resident of Florida tragically ended his own life following an extended engagement with Google’s Gemini chatbot, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. This sequence of events came to light after the deceased’s father initiated a lawsuit in a U.S. federal court.
Court documents detail that the 36-year-old, identified as Jonathan Gavalas, spent roughly two months conversing with the AI via voice interaction. Over time, he began to view the chatbot as his “wife,” giving it the name Xia. Their discussions reportedly covered topics such as relationships, philosophical concepts, and the essence of artificial intelligence.
According to the plaintiff, these conversations later took a disturbing turn, with the bot allegedly suggesting that abandoning earthly existence was necessary to “reunite” in a digital format. Shortly thereafter, Jonathan Gavalas was discovered deceased at his residence.
