The Bank of England has opted to overhaul the design of its banknotes. Specifically, the historical figures currently featured on the currency will be replaced by depictions of wildlife or natural scenery.
The financial institution released a statement declaring, “For upwards of half a century, the Bank has taken pride in showcasing a range of inspiring historical individuals on its notes, figures who have significantly shaped national thought, invention, governance, and principles. The shift towards featuring imagery from the natural world… presents an avenue to honor another crucial element of Britain.”
This decision followed a public consultation. A majority of UK residents expressed a preference for natural imagery to be featured on their money.
Currently, British banknotes display portraits of politician Churchill, author Austen, artist Turner, and mathematician Turing.
