An unusual initiative designed to combat excess weight has been launched by authorities in China’s Jiangsu province. Residents are eligible to receive beef offal, specifically tongue and tail, as a reward for every 0.5 kg they manage to shed. This was reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The publication highlighted that this inventive campaign promoting a healthy lifestyle commenced on social media in the Shanbei community of Jiangsu province on March 9th. Within just ten days of its start, over 2,400 individuals have already registered to participate in this socio-medical endeavor.
Eligibility for the program is restricted solely to residents who contribute to social security or hold medical insurance within that specific locality. Applicants must also have a body mass index (BMI) exceeding 23 (the standard healthy range being between 18.5 and 24.9).
According to several World Health Organization (WHO) experts, the issue of excessive weight presents a significant challenge across Asia. For certain segments of the continent’s population, the ideal BMI thresholds should be lower than those currently defined by international guidelines. Furthermore, waist circumference benchmarks are set at no more than 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men.
The dates and location for the initial weigh-in have already been confirmed and announced; it is scheduled to take place between March 23rd and 27th. Following this, participants will work to reduce their weight, and they are required to report their achievements to the organizing committee between January 1st and 10th of the following year.
