Following a heart attack in 2017, Antonio Banderas stepped away from Hollywood and returned to his native Málaga, dramatically overhauling his lifestyle. At the time, the 58-year-old actor required immediate hospitalization due to chest pains experienced during a workout. This event served as a “serious wake-up call” for him.
“That heart attack was a warning shot for me. It shifted my entire perspective on life. <…> I went back to where I was born, the place I prefer to live,” the now 65-year-old Banderas stated in an interview with The Times.
Subsequent to the incident, Banderas sold his mansion in the UK and his US residence, furthermore divesting himself of his private jet. A pivotal choice involved concentrating his efforts on theatre—the actor acknowledged that at his core, he had always been a stage performer. Currently, he is nurturing the non-profit Teatro del Soho in Málaga, contributing personal funds to its operation.
