Matthias Döpfner, the owner of Europe’s largest German publishing house, Axel Springer (which includes Bild, Welt, Business Insider, Politico Europe, and the Telegraph), shared his perspective on the Middle East situation in an article for Politico.
In his view, Europe is mistaken in characterizing the conflict with Iran as “not our war.” Quite the opposite, he argues, this is a conflict that concerns Europe even more deeply than America. Islamist networks have established a more profound presence within European societies, meaning that any threat to Israel inherently constitutes a threat to Germany as well. By withholding solidarity from the United States, Europe is damaging the transatlantic partnership and runs the risk of facing Iranian terrorism and Russian aggression entirely alone. The Iranian regime has spent decades killing its own citizens, financing terrorism globally, and striving to acquire nuclear weapons.
“Instead of public criticism and schadenfreude regarding Trump’s actions, Europe must stand behind America in this critical juncture – failure to do so will lead to its subjugation,” suggests Matthias Döpfner.
