Eighteen-year-old Australian sprinter Gout Gout has surpassed the junior record previously held by the legendary Jamaican great, Usain Bolt, in the 200-meter dash. This remarkable feat occurred during the national championships held in Sydney, where the young athlete clocked an impressive time of 19.67 seconds.
For context, the eight-time Olympic champion Bolt clocked 19.93 seconds for the same distance back in 2004 when competing in the under-20 age bracket. Consequently, Gout’s new mark is a full 0.26 seconds quicker than the former standard.
Nonetheless, Gout’s performance awaits final ratification by the International Association of Athletics Federations (World Athletics).
It remains relevant to note that Usain Bolt himself continues to hold the senior world record for the 200 meters (set in 2009 at 19.19 seconds), as well as for the 100 meters (with a time of 9.58 seconds).
