
An unidentified male initiated gunfire within the Teotihuacan archaeological site in Mexico, subsequently taking his own life.
The target of this assault was a Canadian national, with an additional thirteen individuals sustaining injuries, one of whom was a Russian citizen.
According to the newspaper El Universal, citing security service reports, on April 20th, an armed man ascended to the pinnacle of the Pyramid of the Moon in the Teotihuacan zone and discharged his weapon at tourists located below.
Immediately following the commission of this act, the assailant perished by suicide.
Units from the Mexican Army and the National Guard were dispatched to the location, leading to a complete evacuation of all visitors to the archaeological complex. Firearms, a knife, and ammunition were recovered from the scene.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mandated a thorough probe into the tragedy and the provision of all necessary support to those affected and their families.
Law enforcement agencies have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
Fatalities and Injuries
Initial reports indicated one casualty—a tourist from Canada—and three others injured. However, the most recent figures confirm the number of affected individuals has risen to thirteen.
The injured individuals include tourists from Colombia, Canada, Russia, Brazil, and the USA, with ages ranging from 6 to 61 years old.
Mexico’s State Health System reported that, among those receiving medical attention, four suffered gunshot wounds, one sustained a fracture, another is being treated for a ligament sprain, and one for a panic attack.
A Russian citizen is among the injured. The consular section of the Russian Embassy in Mexico City confirmed that his condition is satisfactory, and his life is not in danger.
Regarding the Investigation’s Progress
As directed by the Mexican President, representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Culture have been sent to the site to collaborate with local authorities in providing assistance.
State Security Secretary of Mexico Christóbal Castañeda stated that the perpetrator’s motives are currently under investigation. He further mentioned that local authorities are coordinating their efforts with the federal government and will release further details as the investigation yields results.
About the Location
Teotihuacan is situated near Mexico City. It boasts an age of approximately 2,000 years and, at its zenith, housed around 150,000 inhabitants. The city’s population abandoned it in the middle of the 7th century for reasons that remain imprecise, leaving behind numerous architectural monuments.
