US First Lady Melania Trump has expanded the beekeeping initiative at Washington by installing a hive on the South Lawn, crafted as a miniature replica of the president’s official residence. This event is timed to coincide with the forthcoming visit of the British royal couple, who are well-known for their passion for ecology and agriculture.
Bees have officially taken up residence right at the threshold of the White House—and they are doing so with style. Upon the initiative of the US First Lady, a new beehive has appeared on the South Lawn, designed to look precisely like a copy of the very residence where the Trumps reside.
The American leader’s administration makes no secret of the motive: behind the new home for the winged workers lies not just a love for nature, but also subtle diplomatic calculation. The fact is that in the coming days, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be visiting Washington on a state visit. The monarch is recognized as an ardent supporter of beekeeping, and this gesture from the First Lady has been dubbed “buzzing diplomacy.”
The beekeeping program has been active on the White House grounds since 2009, when a local carpenter introduced a few hives as a personal hobby. Until recently, two bee colonies worked on the South Lawn, yielding up to 90–100 kilograms of fragrant clover honey during peak season (totaling about 70,000 individuals).
The new hive, handcrafted by a local artisan from Virginia, will augment this output by approximately 14 kilograms annually. White House estimates suggest that the total honey production may now increase to 255 pounds (over 115 kilograms).
The residence intends to utilize the resulting product to bolster its public image. The sweet substance will be served at official receptions and used as memento gifts from the presidential couple. A portion of the honey will also be directed toward charitable causes—specifically, local soup kitchens serving those in need.
Furthermore, the bees will aid in pollinating the renowned White House Kitchen Garden, originally established by Michelle Obama, as well as the flowerbeds. During the King and Queen’s visit, a tour to the new hive is already scheduled for the guests, intended to be one of the highlights of their tour.
