Apple has reportedly decided to discontinue its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, according to information obtained by MacRumors.
The media outlet’s sources indicate that the corporation has largely accepted Vision Pro’s failure. Interest in the AR/VR headset has not increased, even following the release of an update featuring the M5 chip. Apparently, engineers who were part of the project team have ceased work on a successor to the unsuccessful device.
Insider reports suggest that the Vision Pro developers will now pivot to creating smart glasses. Unlike the bulky headset, this new item is expected to be a compact and advanced gadget. The initial iteration of these glasses is slated to include Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities but will lack an integrated display screen. A separate segment of the project team will focus on updating the Siri voice assistant.
The report mentions that the Vision Pro experienced notably weak sales, moving only about 600,000 units since its launch. Furthermore, company sources revealed that Apple encountered an exceptionally high return rate for the headset, setting a record high among all its product lines.
Journalists concluded that the headset’s underwhelming performance was due to unclear positioning, its substantial weight, and its high price tag. The entry-level version of the device was priced at $3,499, which converts to roughly 262,000 rubles.
Previously, MacRumors authors reported that Apple is preparing to unveil a new suite of gadgets branded with the “Ultra” designation. This premium line is anticipated to encompass a foldable iPhone Ultra and a MacBook Ultra notebook equipped with a touch-sensitive OLED display.
