
Nick Bostrom, the Swedish philosopher renowned as a leading thinker on artificial intelligence risks, has suggested that even a slight chance of human extinction due to AI might be a justifiable trade-off for the prospect of extending human lifespans and establishing a society where technology eradicates scarcity, onerous labor, and biological limitations.
Bostrom gained significant recognition following the 2014 publication of his book, “Superintelligence.” In it, he detailed scenarios wherein a superintelligent AI could become uncontrollable and lead to humanity’s demise. A prime illustration he used was the thought experiment involving a paperclip maximizer, an AI that converts the entire planet into resources to fulfill its singular objective.
Currently, the philosopher’s rhetoric appears notably moderated. In his recent book, “Deep Utopia,” and in a recent paper, Bostrom focuses less on threats and more on the potential upsides presented by advanced AI. He posits that humanity is inherently facing long-term extinction anyway, whereas the successful maturation of artificial intelligence could, for the first time, offer the potential for radically extended lifespans—perhaps virtually without bounds.
Bostrom explicitly noted that his current analysis focuses on just one slice of the issue: the interests of individuals currently alive. In his view, even a high-risk AI system holds the potential to boost the expected longevity of the present generation.
Despite this, the philosopher does not dismiss the possibility of catastrophic outcomes. Identifying as a “concerned optimist,” he concedes that AI development could proceed very poorly. However, Bostrom takes issue with proponents who maintain that the creation of strong AI will almost certainly result in human extinction.
In “Deep Utopia,” Bostrom sketches a hypothetical world where AI provides near-limitless abundance and automates the vast majority of human employment. In such a community, the primary challenge shifts from mere survival to discovering life’s meaning and establishing new human pursuits.
The philosopher asserts that contemporary society is accustomed to the norm where individuals must dedicate a substantial portion of their lives to undesirable work just to subsist. He likened this state to a “partial form of servitude” and theorized that AI might liberate humanity from such dependence for the first time.
Bostrom concedes that once superintelligent entities emerge, humans might relinquish their pivotal role in civilizational progress. He even suggests that AI could author superior philosophical texts. Nevertheless, he argues that human endeavors will retain value—at the very least, because humans remain significant to one another.
The philosopher draws an analogy for this scenario: “humanity’s great retirement.” He envisions people in such a future focusing on creative endeavors, leisure, aesthetic pursuits, spiritual life, and interpersonal connections, rather than the perpetual struggle for survival.
Bostrom dedicated particular attention to the concept of “digital minds”—future AI systems that could attain moral standing. He suggests that if AI achieves self-awareness, along with long-term objectives and the capacity for relationships, humanity will be obligated to consider its interests similarly to how we currently consider animal welfare.
The philosopher believes that the relationship between humans and AI moving forward could become paramount to civilization. Therefore, he argues, developers must not only solve the problem of aligning AI goals with human values but also establish interactions with artificial intelligence from the outset based on principles of respect and collaboration.
Bostrom’s latest pronouncements illustrate how swiftly the AI discourse is evolving: one of the foremost symbols of apprehension regarding superintelligence is now speaking less about humanity’s end and more about the potential for its radical metamorphosis.
