In the state of Florida, 37-year-old teacher Heather Mashburn-Smith has been charged with unlawful sexual activity involving a 17-year-old student. The woman provided a full statement after receiving her Miranda warnings. Court documents indicate that Mashburn-Smith engaged in sexual relations with the teenager on at least two occasions within her classroom at the school.
Their instant messaging exchanges began after the student complimented the teacher by calling her “beautiful,” and rapidly developed into flirtation. During their meetings, she expressed dissatisfaction with her marriage and mentioned plans to leave her husband once the teenager reached the age of 18.
Although the student subsequently blocked the teacher, she persisted in contacting him. Heather Mashburn-Smith admitted awareness of his age but claimed he made her feel desired.
The woman has been suspended from her position at the school. She now faces a charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.

Additional charges were announced on April 15. Noel is charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile, first-degree rape, production of child sexual abuse material, and other statutes. The woman is currently detained at the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center.
