Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Yusuf Mehdi, will be stepping down after 35 years with the software giant. Mehdi announced his departure in an internal memo to colleagues, indicating that he will be leaving Microsoft next year. He will continue to champion products such as Windows, Copilot, Microsoft 365, and other consumer offerings until 2027.
“As I contemplated this decision, one thing was absolutely clear: I want to ensure I have the time and ability to set our team and our broader mission up for continued success. We are in an incredibly pivotal moment for Microsoft and for our customers,” Mehdi stated in his message.
According to an insider, Mehdi is currently collaborating with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and other senior executives on a succession plan. However, the identity of his successor has not yet been revealed. It’s worth noting that Mehdi is not the first seasoned executive to announce their departure from Microsoft in recent months.
Mehdi began his career at Microsoft as an intern in the 1990s, a path taken by many other long-serving employees. Early in his career, he was involved in the launch of Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, as well as the marketing of Internet Explorer. For over a decade, Mehdi oversaw Microsoft’s search and online businesses. He also played a role in the introduction of Xbox One, Windows 10, and Copilot+ PC.
“I’ve had the honor of being part of some of the most significant shifts in technology—from the dawn of Windows and the early internet to search, gaming, devices, and now one of the deepest platform transitions with AI. This is an exciting, yet challenging decision, as Microsoft has been far more than a workplace to me. It has truly been the canvas for the defining work of my life,” Mehdi shared in his announcement.
