Around 1:50 AM, shortly after midnight, a fire broke out near a downtown Winnipeg park, engulfing a bus belonging to the Kane County Cougars baseball team.
By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the vehicle was fully ablaze. The Cougars, hailing from Illinois, were in Winnipeg for a three-game series against the Goldeyes in the American Association.
Security camera footage allowed authorities to identify a minor as being involved. The fire reportedly destroyed the bus, all the team’s luggage, and their sports equipment, according to ABC.
The individual, who was 15 at the time of the incident, has been charged with arson, mischief to property, and unlawful possession of incendiary material.
Police stated that the teenager was subsequently released into the custody of a “suitable adult” and is scheduled to appear in court under specified legal conditions.
A replacement bus has been provided to ensure the team’s continued travel for their games in North Dakota.
