The Finnish national team emerged victorious at the Ice Hockey World Championship held in Switzerland, securing their fifth gold medal in the country’s history.
In the championship game, which took place in Zurich, the Finns triumphed over the Swiss with a 1-0 score in overtime.
Earlier on Sunday, Norway clinched the bronze medal, defeating Canada 3-2 in an overtime victory.
Prior to this win, the Finns had claimed the World Championship title four times, with their most recent success in 2022. Following that victory, they had not advanced past the quarter-finals in subsequent tournaments. During the group stage of this year’s competition, Finland suffered a 2-4 loss to the Swiss.
The Swiss reached the final for the third consecutive year. In 2024, they were defeated in the decisive match by the Czech Republic (0-2), and in 2025, they lost to the United States (0-1 after overtime).
