Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced on June 5th that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the FIFA World Cup scheduled to take place in the United States.
“Putin will not be going,” he stated in an interview with RIA Novosti.
US President Donald Trump had previously mentioned on May 7th that he would not pay $1,000 to attend the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between the US and Paraguay. Furthermore, he expressed concern over the high cost of tickets, suggesting that ordinary fans, including his constituents from Queens and Brooklyn, would be unable to afford them and thus be excluded from attending matches.
On May 27th, The Independent, a British newspaper, reported that the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey had launched an investigation into FIFA’s operations. This action was prompted by complaints regarding inflated prices and alleged deception of fans in the sale of tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches.
