Finnair is currently in discussions with various satellite internet providers, such as Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, with the aim of equipping its fleet with onboard Wi-Fi connectivity.
According to CEO Turkka Kuusisto, the airline is evaluating all available options and intends to finalize its Wi-Fi implementation strategy within the current year. While he acknowledged it’s too early to pinpoint a definitive timeline for a final decision, the company is committed to selecting a long-term technological platform for in-flight communication.
“We are engaged in discussions with all service providers. This provides us with an excellent opportunity to assess which communication platform will be relevant in the future,” stated Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto.
Satellite internet is rapidly emerging as a critical area for the global aviation industry. Major carriers like Emirates, Lufthansa, and United Airlines are already opting for Starlink’s solutions, while Amazon is actively promoting its own services for the aviation market.
In May, the world’s first large-scale Airbus A380 aircraft was equipped with Starlink. It was previously reported that Starlink had, for the first time in history, installed a system on a commercial aircraft capable of delivering speeds exceeding 2 Gbps.
Emirates is in the process of integrating Starlink technology across its entire fleet, commencing with Boeing 777 aircraft in November 2025, with plans to complete this rollout by mid-2027.
