
Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, presented Pope Francis with a personalized club jersey, as reported on the club’s official website.
The Pontiff is currently visiting Spain from June 6th to 12th. On Monday, he met with the Archdiocese of Madrid at Real Madrid’s home ground, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
At the arena, Pope Francis was welcomed by Pérez, who gifted the Pope a Real Madrid shirt bearing his secular name, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and the number 1, along with a miniature replica of the club’s stadium. In return, Pope Francis presented the head of Real Madrid with a medal. Pérez had been re-elected as the president of the La Liga club on Sunday following early elections.
Pérez, aged 79, previously held the presidency of Real Madrid from 2000 to 2006 and was elected again in 2009. During his tenure, the club has won the Spanish championship seven times, the Copa del Rey three times, and the Spanish Super Cup seven times. Additionally, they have secured the Champions League title seven times, the UEFA Super Cup six times, the FIFA Club World Cup five times, and the Intercontinental Cup twice.
