A preliminary investigation has concluded in Japan regarding a high-profile road traffic accident that claimed the lives of six individuals. The driver responsible for the crash, Mitsue Mizutani, a 54-year-old truck driver from Fukushima Prefecture, has fully admitted her guilt.
The woman stated that her distraction while watching a cooking video on her smartphone was the cause of the collision. This incident has generated significant public outcry, and a final verdict has yet to be delivered.
The tragedy unfolded on the night of March 20th within a tunnel on a highway. Mizutani’s truck collided at full speed with the rear of a traffic jam caused by road construction. The impact struck a passenger car carrying a family of five. The heavy vehicle crushed the car before hitting several other vehicles.
A fire quickly erupted at the scene, which rescue workers were unable to extinguish before the flames destroyed any possibility of survival. Consequently, all five family members and an additional driver perished.
During questioning, Mizutani explained that she was not exceeding the speed limit. However, she acknowledged that her attention was diverted while driving. Initially, she was engaged in a hands-free conversation with a colleague. Subsequently, she decided to watch a cooking video on her phone. In an attempt to screenshot the video, she completely took her eyes off the road for 13 seconds. It was during this exact interval that the collision occurred.
The court has not yet determined the final sentence; the date of the hearing and the potential prison term remain undisclosed.
