For the first time in its history, Egypt’s national football team has won a knockout match at the World Cup.
On July 3, the Egyptians defeated Australia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup (1:1, 4:2 on penalties).
Until now, Egypt had only reached the first knockout round once—back in 1934, when they lost to Hungary (2:4). In both 1990 and 2018, the team failed to advance past the group stage.
In the Round of 16, Egypt will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.
