Autonomous has released an unusual accessory called the Autonomous Key, designed to combat smartphone addiction by physically restricting access to apps. It is a small NFC key that must be tapped against the phone to unlock pre-blocked applications—such as TikTok or Telegram.
Unlike built-in tools that limit app usage solely through software—and can easily be bypassed by changing settings—the Autonomous Key introduces a genuine physical barrier. Access to the selected apps remains blocked until the user taps the key against the smartphone.
The device operates without a battery; it utilizes a passive NFC chip, so the key never needs charging. It is compatible with both Android smartphones and iPhones.
Users select the apps to restrict via a dedicated app, while the system tracks usage statistics, such as how often the key is used and how much time is spent on the blocked services. Additionally, AI-driven algorithms analyze user behavior and provide recommendations to help gradually reduce social media dependency.
The developers claim that this approach can cut time spent on social media nearly in half, improve sleep quality, and help curb impulsive smartphone use. The Autonomous Key is currently available for purchase in the US for $9.
