
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have created a first-of-its-kind multi-region brain organoid. Unlike previous organoids that focused on a single brain region, this one connects neural tissues from different areas (such as the cortex, hindbrain, and midbrain) and includes rudimentary blood vessels. Scientists used light sheet microscopy to confirm that the fused tissues began producing electrical signals and functioning as a network. The organoid resembles a 40-day-old human fetus in terms of cellular diversity. This advancement could revolutionize research into neuropsychiatric disorders like autism or schizophrenia, providing a new platform to study whole-brain development and test treatments in ways not possible with animal models.
