Developers have announced preclinical success for a vaccine candidate targeting an emerging viral pathogen — mpox (formerly monkeypox). The focus is on LC16m8, an attenuated vaccinia virus vaccine originally developed for smallpox. Recent studies evaluated its immunogenicity and safety across multiple animal models (mice, non-human primates) and later in human volunteers. Results showed that LC16m8 induced strong humoral responses, reduced viral loads in lung tissue, and generated neutralizing antibodies against multiple mpox variants without serious adverse events. These outcomes suggest the vaccine could be a safe, effective, and scalable option for mpox vaccination, potentially accelerating approval and deployment during outbreaks and helping to reduce transmission rates.
