Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a promising alternative to lithium-ion models. Made from more abundant materials (like common salt), they offer a cheaper and safer solution. Major players, including China’s CATL and BYD, have invested heavily, with CATL launching the first generation back in 2021 and ramping up serial production. These batteries are already being tested in various applications: JMEV released an EV3 with a sodium-ion block, Yadea introduced four scooter models, and pilot projects for quick-swap stations for couriers are underway in cities like Shenzhen. The technology could significantly impact both energy grids and the affordability of electric vehicles worldwide.
