Researchers at Kindred Companion Sciences have successfully created hypoallergenic beagle puppies using CRISPR-based gene editing. The team targeted the gene responsible for producing Can f 1, the primary allergen found in dog saliva and dander. By editing the genetic code in skin cells and then transferring the modified material to surrogate egg cells, the scientists gave birth to two healthy puppies — Bailey and Alfie — in September 2024. Post-birth analysis confirmed the absence of the allergen in their saliva and fur. While the breakthrough offers hope for people with severe dog allergies, experts caution that other potential allergens may still be present, and further long-term studies are needed to confirm both safety and efficacy.
