A passenger train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex, England, on Thursday, August 13. The train, traveling from London Victoria to Eastbourne, lost its track between Haywards Heath and Lewes stations. Three of the eight carriages left the tracks and overturned onto their sides. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. Passengers who were trapped in the overturned carriages were evacuated. Two people sustained serious injuries, and a further 18 others suffered less serious injuries. Some injured individuals were treated at the scene, while others were taken to local hospitals. A major incident was declared, and the line between Lewes and Haywards Heath remained closed while authorities assessed the damage and investigated the cause. Transport experts suggested that the exceptional heat might have contributed — possibly by causing the rails to buckle or the dry ground beneath them to collapse.
