
Researchers at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich have developed a three-dimensional model of human brain tissue using human cells. This model, consisting of tiny spherical tissue aggregates (about half the size of a pinhead), integrates three key cell types: neurons, astrocytes, and microglia. By using human cells, the team can more accurately study cellular interactions and the pathological changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, such as the formation of amyloid plaques and tau protein abnormalities. The authors believe this approach offers advantages over animal models and could accelerate the discovery of effective treatments. The findings were published in Nature Neuroscience.
