
A study published in Science Advances on August 19 analyzed the genomes of 42 individuals from the ancient Jomon culture, who lived in Japan between 16,000 and 3,000 years ago. Researchers found evidence of natural selection acting on genes associated with brown adipose tissue, lipid metabolism, and cold sensitivity (notably UCP1, APOA5, and FTO). These genetic variants helped ancient populations efficiently convert fat into heat to survive harsh winters. However, the same variants in modern humans, living in an environment of constant caloric abundance, are now linked to a higher body mass index. The study highlights how traits that were once advantageous for survival can have unintended health consequences in contemporary conditions.
